With EPS Growth And More, Fortive (NYSE:FTV) Makes An Interesting Case
Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Fortive (NYSE:FTV). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

Fortive's Improving Profits
In the last three years Fortive's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. It's good to see that Fortive's EPS has grown from US$1.83 to US$2.16 over twelve months. There's little doubt shareholders would be happy with that 18% gain.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. The music to the ears of Fortive shareholders is that EBIT margins have grown from 16% to 18% in the last 12 months and revenues are on an upwards trend as well. That's great to see, on both counts.

The trick, as an investor, is to find companies that are going to perform well in the future, not just in the past. While crystal balls don't exist, you can check our visualization of consensus analyst forecasts for Fortive's future EPS 100% free.
Are Fortive Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$23b company like Fortive. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they hold US$48m worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. While their ownership only accounts for 0.2%, this is still a considerable amount at stake to encourage the business to maintain a strategy that will deliver value to shareholders.
Does Fortive Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
As previously touched on, Fortive is a growing business, which is encouraging. To add an extra spark to the fire, significant insider ownership in the company is another highlight. These two factors are a huge highlight for the company which should be a strong contender your watchlists. Of course, just because Fortive is growing does not mean it is undervalued.
