The three-year decline in earnings for Northwest Bancshares NASDAQ:NWBI) isn't encouraging, but shareholders are still up 6.1% over that period

Many investors define successful investing as beating the market average over the long term. But the risk of stock picking is that you will likely buy under-performing companies. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term Northwest Bancshares, Inc. (NASDAQ:NWBI) shareholders, since the share price is down 12% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 21%. The share price has dropped 12% in three months. Of course, this share price action may well have been influenced by the 11% decline in the broader market, throughout the period.

If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for Northwest Bancshares isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the three years that the share price fell, Northwest Bancshares' earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 14% each year. In comparison the 4% compound annual share price decline isn't as bad as the EPS drop-off. This suggests that the market retains some optimism around long term earnings stability, despite past EPS declines.

It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Northwest Bancshares' TSR for the last 3 years was 6.1%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Northwest Bancshares has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 9.3% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 5% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
