The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like ConnectOne Bancorp (NASDAQ:CNOB). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide ConnectOne Bancorp with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

ConnectOne Bancorp's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS) outcomes. So it makes sense that experienced investors pay close attention to company EPS when undertaking investment research. ConnectOne Bancorp managed to grow EPS by 15% per year, over three years. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Not all of ConnectOne Bancorp's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers used in this article might not be the best representation of the underlying business. ConnectOne Bancorp maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 13% to US$292m. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are ConnectOne Bancorp Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's a necessity that company leaders act in the best interest of shareholders and so insider investment always comes as a reassurance to the market. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own ConnectOne Bancorp shares worth a considerable sum. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$106m. Investors will appreciate management having this amount of skin in the game as it shows their commitment to the company's future.

While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to ConnectOne Bancorp, with market caps between US$400m and US$1.6b, is around US$4.0m.

ConnectOne Bancorp offered total compensation worth US$3.1m to its CEO in the year to December 2021. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.

Is ConnectOne Bancorp Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One important encouraging feature of ConnectOne Bancorp is that it is growing profits. Earnings growth might be the main attraction for ConnectOne Bancorp, but the fun does not stop there. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, you'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. Of course, just because ConnectOne Bancorp is growing does not mean it is undervalued.
