Investing in Commerce Bancshares (NASDAQ:CBSH) a year ago would have delivered you a 29% gain
Diversification is a key tool for dealing with stock price volatility. Of course, in an ideal world, all your stocks would beat the market. Commerce Bancshares, Inc. (NASDAQ:CBSH) has done well over the last year, with the stock price up 27% beating the market return of 25% (not including dividends). The longer term returns have not been as good, with the stock price only 11% higher than it was three years ago.
Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Commerce Bancshares was able to grow EPS by 12% in the last twelve months. The share price gain of 27% certainly outpaced the EPS growth. This indicates that the market is now more optimistic about the stock.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Commerce Bancshares, it has a TSR of 29% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Commerce Bancshares' TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 29%. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 6% per year. It is possible that management foresight will bring growth well into the future, even if the share price slows down. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Commerce Bancshares better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 1 warning sign for Commerce Bancshares you should be aware of.
