The Rivian Automotive, Inc. (NASDAQ:RIVN) Analysts Have Been Trimming Their Sales Forecasts
Market forces rained on the parade of Rivian Automotive, Inc. (NASDAQ:RIVN) shareholders today, when the analysts downgraded their forecasts for this year. This report focused on revenue estimates, and it looks as though the consensus view of the business has become substantially more conservative.
After the downgrade, the 23 analysts covering Rivian Automotive are now predicting revenues of US$4.9b in 2024. If met, this would reflect a notable 11% improvement in sales compared to the last 12 months. Losses are presumed to reduce, shrinking 14% per share from last year to US$4.81. However, before this estimates update, the consensus had been expecting revenues of US$6.0b and US$4.46 per share in losses. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a serious cut to their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase.

The consensus price target fell 22% to US$19.04, with the analysts clearly concerned about the company following the weaker revenue and earnings outlook.
Another way we can view these estimates is in the context of the bigger picture, such as how the forecasts stack up against past performance, and whether forecasts are more or less bullish relative to other companies in the industry. It's pretty clear that there is an expectation that Rivian Automotive's revenue growth will slow down substantially, with revenues to the end of 2024 expected to display 11% growth on an annualised basis. This is compared to a historical growth rate of 116% over the past three years. Compare this against other companies (with analyst forecasts) in the industry, which are in aggregate expected to see revenue growth of 13% annually. So it's pretty clear that, while revenue growth is expected to slow down, the wider industry is also expected to grow faster than Rivian Automotive.
The Bottom Line
The most important thing to take away is that analysts increased their loss per share estimates for this year. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that Rivian Automotive's revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. The consensus price target fell measurably, with analysts seemingly not reassured by recent business developments, leading to a lower estimate of Rivian Automotive's future valuation. Overall, given the drastic downgrade to this year's forecasts, we'd be feeling a little more wary of Rivian Automotive going forwards.
