Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at Creative Sensor (TWSE:8249) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Creative Sensor:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.068 = NT$375m ÷ (NT$7.7b - NT$2.2b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).

So, Creative Sensor has an ROCE of 6.8%. On its own that's a low return on capital but it's in line with the industry's average returns of 6.8%.

Even though ROCE is still low in absolute terms, it's good to see it's heading in the right direction. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 6.8%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 65% more capital is being employed now too. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at Creative Sensor thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.

In Conclusion...

To sum it up, Creative Sensor has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. And with a respectable 54% awarded to those who held the stock over the last five years, you could argue that these developments are starting to get the attention they deserve.
