SBS Transit (SGX:S61) delivers shareholders notable 41% return over 1 year, surging 7.2% in the last week alone
A diverse portfolio of stocks will always have winners and losers. Of course, in an ideal world, all your stocks would beat the market. SBS Transit Ltd (SGX:S61) has done well over the last year, with the stock price up 27% beating the market return of 23% (not including dividends). Having said that, the longer term returns aren't so impressive, with stock gaining just 11% in three years.
The past week has proven to be lucrative for SBS Transit investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's one-year performance.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the last year SBS Transit grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 0.9%. The share price gain of 27% certainly outpaced the EPS growth. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of SBS Transit, it has a TSR of 41% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that SBS Transit has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 41% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 7%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for SBS Transit (of which 1 is a bit concerning!) you should know about.
