Stock Analysis

If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Tye Soon (SGX:BFU) Before It's Too Late

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Tye Soon (SGX:BFU), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Tye Soon Growing?

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Impressively, Tye Soon has grown EPS by 19% per year, compound, in the last three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Tye Soon's EBIT margins are flat but, of some concern, its revenue is actually down. And that does make me a little more cautious of the stock.

Since Tye Soon is no giant, with a market capitalization of S$31m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are Tye Soon Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like standing at the lookout, surveying the horizon at sunrise, insider buying, for some investors, sparks joy. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

Any way you look at it Tye Soon shareholders can gain quiet confidence from the fact that insiders shelled out S$373k to buy stock, over the last year. When you contrast that with the complete lack of sales, it's easy for shareholders to brim with joyful expectancy. It is also worth noting that it was MD & Executive Director Tek Yew Chong who made the biggest single purchase, worth S$130k, paying S$0.39 per share.

Is Tye Soon Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about Tye Soon's strong EPS growth. The growth rate whets my appetite for research, and the insider buying only increases my interest in the stock. To put it succinctly; Tye Soon is a strong candidate for your watchlist. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Tye Soon (of which 2 shouldn't be ignored!) you should know about.

The good news is that Tye Soon is not the only growth stock with insider buying. Here's a list of them... with insider buying in the last three months!
