RH PetroGas (SGX:T13) sheds 16% this week, as yearly returns fall more in line with earnings growth

RH PetroGas Limited (SGX:T13) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 24% in the last quarter. But that does not change the realty that the stock's performance has been terrific, over five years. Indeed, the share price is up a whopping 611% in that time. So it might be that some shareholders are taking profits after good performance. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price. While the returns over the last 5 years have been good, we do feel sorry for those shareholders who haven't held shares that long, because the share price is down 56% in the last three years. We love happy stories like this one. The company should be really proud of that performance!

Although RH PetroGas has shed S$21m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, RH PetroGas achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 43% per year. So the EPS growth rate is rather close to the annualized share price gain of 48% per year. This indicates that investor sentiment towards the company has not changed a great deal. In fact, the share price seems to largely reflect the EPS growth.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 12% in the last year, RH PetroGas shareholders lost 28%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 48% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with RH PetroGas (at least 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
