Would Shareholders Who Purchased Nordic Group's (SGX:MR7) Stock Three Years Be Happy With The Share price Today?

While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Nordic Group Limited (SGX:MR7) share price has gained 17% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been disappointing. Tragically, the share price declined 57% in that time. So the improvement may be a real relief to some. After all, could be that the fall was overdone.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the three years that the share price fell, Nordic Group's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 24% each year. So do you think it's a coincidence that the share price has dropped 24% per year, a very similar rate to the EPS? We don't. So it seems like sentiment towards the stock hasn't changed all that much over time. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Nordic Group, it has a TSR of -53% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

The total return of 10% received by Nordic Group shareholders over the last year isn't far from the market return of -10%. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 9%, each year, over five years. If the stock price has been impacted by changing sentiment, rather than deteriorating business conditions, it could spell opportunity. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
