It might seem bad, but the worst that can happen when you buy a stock (without leverage) is that its share price goes to zero. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Ecoclime Group AB (publ) (STO:ECC B) share price has soared 206% in the last three years. Most would be happy with that. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 32% gain in the last three months.

While Ecoclime Group made a small profit, in the last year, we think that the market is probably more focussed on the top line growth at the moment. Generally speaking, we'd consider a stock like this alongside loss-making companies, simply because the quantum of the profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.

Over the last three years Ecoclime Group has grown its revenue at 40% annually. That's much better than most loss-making companies. Along the way, the share price gained 45% per year, a solid pop by our standards. This suggests the market has recognized the progress the business has made, at least to a significant degree. That's not to say we think the share price is too high. In fact, it might be worth keeping an eye on this one.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between Ecoclime Group's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. We note that Ecoclime Group's TSR, at 228% is higher than its share price return of 206%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Ecoclime Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 96% over the last year. That's better than the annualised return of 19% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Ecoclime Group better, we need to consider many other factors.
