Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Comeco (WSE:CMC). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

Comeco's Improving Profits

In the last three years Comeco's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a firecracker arcing through the night sky, Comeco's EPS shot from zł0.017 to zł0.029, over the last year. Year on year growth of 78% is certainly a sight to behold.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Comeco's EBIT margins are flat but, of some concern, its revenue is actually down. And that does make me a little more cautious of the stock.

Since Comeco is no giant, with a market capitalization of zł5.2m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are Comeco Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Comeco insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. Indeed, with a collective holding of 71%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. Of course, Comeco is a very small company, with a market cap of only zł5.2m. So despite a large proportional holding, insiders only have zł3.7m worth of stock. That's not a huge stake in absolute terms, but it should help keep insiders aligned with other shareholders.

Does Comeco Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Comeco's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So to my mind Comeco is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies. It's still necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with Comeco (at least 3 which shouldn't be ignored) , and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
