Nordic Semiconductor ASA (OB:NOD) Analysts Are Reducing Their Forecasts For This Year
The latest analyst coverage could presage a bad day for Nordic Semiconductor ASA (OB:NOD), with the analysts making across-the-board cuts to their statutory estimates that might leave shareholders a little shell-shocked. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts went under the knife, suggesting analysts have soured majorly on the business.
Following the downgrade, the current consensus from Nordic Semiconductor's seven analysts is for revenues of US$795m in 2023 which - if met - would reflect a satisfactory 2.4% increase on its sales over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are supposed to decline 20% to US$0.51 in the same period. Previously, the analysts had been modelling revenues of US$886m and earnings per share (EPS) of US$0.67 in 2023. It looks like analyst sentiment has declined substantially, with a substantial drop in revenue estimates and a large cut to earnings per share numbers as well.

The consensus price target fell 13% to kr170, with the weaker earnings outlook clearly leading analyst valuation estimates. It could also be instructive to look at the range of analyst estimates, to evaluate how different the outlier opinions are from the mean. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Nordic Semiconductor at kr230 per share, while the most bearish prices it at kr120. Note the wide gap in analyst price targets? This implies to us that there is a fairly broad range of possible scenarios for the underlying business.
One way to get more context on these forecasts is to look at how they compare to both past performance, and how other companies in the same industry are performing. It's pretty clear that there is an expectation that Nordic Semiconductor's revenue growth will slow down substantially, with revenues to the end of 2023 expected to display 2.4% growth on an annualised basis. This is compared to a historical growth rate of 27% over the past five years. By way of comparison, the other companies in this industry with analyst coverage are forecast to grow their revenue at 12% per year. Factoring in the forecast slowdown in growth, it seems obvious that Nordic Semiconductor is also expected to grow slower than other industry participants.
The Bottom Line
The biggest issue in the new estimates is that analysts have reduced their earnings per share estimates, suggesting business headwinds lay ahead for Nordic Semiconductor. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and the latest forecasts imply the business will grow sales slower than the wider market. Given the scope of the downgrades, it would not be a surprise to see the market become more wary of the business.
