Introducing KCTech (KRX:281820), A Stock That Climbed 52% In The Last Three Years
By buying an index fund, you can roughly match the market return with ease. But if you choose individual stocks with prowess, you can make superior returns. Just take a look at KCTech Co., Ltd. (KRX:281820), which is up 52%, over three years, soundly beating the market return of 20% (not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 28% in the last year , including dividends .

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the three years of share price growth, KCTech actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) drop 16% per year.
This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Given this situation, it makes sense to look at other metrics too.
You can only imagine how long term shareholders feel about the declining revenue trend (slipping at 19% per year). What's clear is that historic earnings and revenue aren't matching up with the share price action, very well. So you might have to dig deeper to get a grasp of the situation

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We've already covered KCTech's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. KCTech hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of 59% exceeds its share price return of 52%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.
A Different Perspective
Over the last year KCTech shareholders have received a TSR of 28%. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return of around 44%. On the bright side that gain is actually better than the average return of 17% over the last three years, implying that the company is doing better recently. If the share price is up as a result of improved business performance, then this kind of improvement may be sustained. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
