Exicon Co., Ltd.'s (KOSDAQ:092870) Shares Climb 28% But Its Business Is Yet to Catch Up
Exicon Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:092870) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 28% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 53% in the last year.
After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Exicon is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 3.5x, considering almost half the companies in Korea's Semiconductor industry have P/S ratios below 1.8x. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Exicon Has Been Performing
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Exicon over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Exicon's to be considered reasonable.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 36%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 12% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 88% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
With this information, we find it concerning that Exicon is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Exicon's P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Exicon currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
