SunjinLtd (KRX:136490) earnings and shareholder returns have been trending downwards for the last three years, but the stock soars 10% this past week
It's nice to see the Sunjin Co.,Ltd. (KRX:136490) share price up 10% in a week. But over the last three years we've seen a quite serious decline. Indeed, the share price is down a tragic 59% in the last three years. So the improvement may be a real relief to some. After all, could be that the fall was overdone.
While the stock has risen 10% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.
In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
SunjinLtd saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 44% per year, over the last three years. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 25% compound annual share price fall. This suggests that the market retains some optimism around long term earnings stability, despite past EPS declines.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

A Different Perspective
While the broader market lost about 5.2% in the twelve months, SunjinLtd shareholders did even worse, losing 16% (even including dividends). However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 3% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
