Even With A 42% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Accrete Inc.'s (TSE:4395) Performance Completely
Accrete Inc. (TSE:4395) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 42% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 71%.
Although its price has surged higher, when close to half the companies operating in Japan's Wireless Telecom industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 2.3x, you may still consider Accrete as an enticing stock to check out with its 1.3x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Accrete Has Been Performing
The revenue growth achieved at Accrete over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. Perhaps the market is expecting this acceptable revenue performance to take a dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. Those who are bullish on Accrete will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Accrete's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 18% gain to the company's top line. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 32% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 6.0% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Accrete's P/S isn't as high compared to that of its industry peers. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
What We Can Learn From Accrete's P/S?
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Accrete's P/S close to the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of Accrete revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
