Does The Market Have A Low Tolerance For Hosiden Corporation's (TSE:6804) Mixed Fundamentals?
Hosiden (TSE:6804) has had a rough week with its share price down 6.5%. We, however decided to study the company's financials to determine if they have got anything to do with the price decline. Fundamentals usually dictate market outcomes so it makes sense to study the company's financials. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Hosiden's ROE today.
Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits.
How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
The formula for ROE is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Hosiden is:
8.2% = JP¥12b ÷ JP¥143b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025).
The 'return' is the yearly profit. Another way to think of that is that for every ¥1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn ¥0.08 in profit.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.
Hosiden's Earnings Growth And 8.2% ROE
At first glance, Hosiden's ROE doesn't look very promising. However, its ROE is similar to the industry average of 8.4%, so we won't completely dismiss the company. But then again, Hosiden's five year net income shrunk at a rate of 2.4%. Remember, the company's ROE is a bit low to begin with. So that's what might be causing earnings growth to shrink.
That being said, we compared Hosiden's performance with the industry and were concerned when we found that while the company has shrunk its earnings, the industry has grown its earnings at a rate of 13% in the same 5-year period.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. Is Hosiden Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
Despite having a normal three-year median payout ratio of 30% (where it is retaining 70% of its profits), Hosiden has seen a decline in earnings as we saw above. So there might be other factors at play here which could potentially be hampering growth. For example, the business has faced some headwinds.
In addition, Hosiden has been paying dividends over a period of at least ten years suggesting that keeping up dividend payments is way more important to the management even if it comes at the cost of business growth.
Conclusion
On the whole, we feel that the performance shown by Hosiden can be open to many interpretations. While the company does have a high rate of reinvestment, the low ROE means that all that reinvestment is not reaping any benefit to its investors, and moreover, its having a negative impact on the earnings growth. That being so, the latest industry analyst forecasts show that the analysts are expecting to see a huge improvement in the company's earnings growth rate.
