There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So, when we ran our eye over OBICLtd's (TSE:4684) trend of ROCE, we liked what we saw.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for OBICLtd, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.18 = JP¥69b ÷ (JP¥411b - JP¥20b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).

Thus, OBICLtd has an ROCE of 18%. In absolute terms, that's a pretty normal return, and it's somewhat close to the IT industry average of 16%.

So How Is OBICLtd's ROCE Trending?

The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. The company has employed 80% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 18%. Since 18% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.

The Bottom Line On OBICLtd's ROCE

The main thing to remember is that OBICLtd has proven its ability to continually reinvest at respectable rates of return. And the stock has followed suit returning a meaningful 92% to shareholders over the last five years. So even though the stock might be more "expensive" than it was before, we think the strong fundamentals warrant this stock for further research.
