CRE Doesn't Earn Enough To Cover Its Payments
Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. Based on the last payment, earnings were actually smaller than the dividend, and the company was actually spending more cash than it was making. Paying out such a large dividend compared to earnings while also not generating free cash flows is a major warning sign for the sustainability of the dividend as these levels are certainly a bit high.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 44.2%. However, if the dividend continues along recent trends, it could start putting pressure on the balance sheet with the payout ratio getting very high over the next year.
CRE Is Still Building Its Track Record

The annual payment during the last 9 years was ¥2.50 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥26.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 30% a year over that time. CRE has been growing its dividend quite rapidly, which is exciting. However, the short payment history makes us question whether this performance will persist across a full market cycle.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. Over the past five years, it looks as though CRE's EPS has declined at around 26% a year. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.
