Revenues Not Telling The Story For RVH Inc. (TSE:6786) After Shares Rise 56%
RVH Inc. (TSE:6786) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 56% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 59% in the last year.
Following the firm bounce in price, given close to half the companies operating in Japan's Consumer Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.9x, you may consider RVH as a stock to potentially avoid with its 1.7x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does RVH's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
RVH has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. Perhaps the market is expecting this decent revenue performance to beat out the industry over the near term, which has kept the P/S propped up. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like RVH's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 15% last year. As a result, it also grew revenue by 20% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 12% shows it's noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's alarming that RVH's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Bottom Line On RVH's P/S
RVH shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
The fact that RVH currently trades on a higher P/S relative to the industry is an oddity, since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. When we observe slower-than-industry revenue growth alongside a high P/S ratio, we assume there to be a significant risk of the share price decreasing, which would result in a lower P/S ratio. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.
