For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Toyota Motor (TSE:7203), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Toyota Motor with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

Toyota Motor's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. It certainly is nice to see that Toyota Motor has managed to grow EPS by 32% per year over three years. If growth like this continues on into the future, then shareholders will have plenty to smile about.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. It's noted that Toyota Motor's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort our analysis of its margins. Toyota Motor shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 7.3% to 12%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Toyota Motor Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a JP¥39t company like Toyota Motor. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at JP¥70b. This comes in at 0.2% of shares in the company, which is a fair amount of a business of this size. This still shows shareholders there is a degree of alignment between management and themselves.

Is Toyota Motor Worth Keeping An Eye On?

For growth investors, Toyota Motor's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. This EPS growth rate is something the company should be proud of, and so it's no surprise that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. On the balance of its merits, solid EPS growth and company insiders who are aligned with the shareholders would indicate a business that is worthy of further research. You should always think about risks though. Case in point, we've spotted 3 warning signs for Toyota Motor you should be aware of, and 2 of them are a bit concerning.
