Rai Way (BIT:RWAY) stock performs better than its underlying earnings growth over last five years
If you buy and hold a stock for many years, you'd hope to be making a profit. Furthermore, you'd generally like to see the share price rise faster than the market. But Rai Way S.p.A. (BIT:RWAY) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 19% over five years, which is below the market return. Zooming in, the stock is up a respectable 14% in the last year.
Since it's been a strong week for Rai Way shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.
We've discovered 2 warning signs about Rai Way. View them for free.To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Over half a decade, Rai Way managed to grow its earnings per share at 7.5% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 4% average annual increase in the share price. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Rai Way the TSR over the last 5 years was 53%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Rai Way shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 21% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 9% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Rai Way (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
