Rai Way (BIT:RWAY) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
The board of Rai Way S.p.A. (BIT:RWAY) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of €0.334 on the 21st of May, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This takes the dividend yield to 5.8%, which shareholders will be pleased with.
Rai Way's Future Dividends May Potentially Be At Risk
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Before making this announcement, the company's dividend was much higher than its earnings. Without profits and cash flows increasing, it would be difficult for the company to continue paying the dividend at this level.
Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 11.6% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could reach 99%, which probably can't continue without putting some pressure on the balance sheet.

Rai Way Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from €0.123 total annually to €0.334. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 10% a year over that time. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Rai Way has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 7.5% per annum. While EPS is growing at a decent rate, but future growth could be limited by the amount of earnings being paid out to shareholders.
Rai Way's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. We can't deny that the payments have been very stable, but we are a little bit worried about the very high payout ratio. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
