A Closer Look At Cy4gate's Earnings
As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
For the year to June 2021, Cy4gate had an accrual ratio of 0.81. As a general rule, that bodes poorly for future profitability. And indeed, during the period the company didn't produce any free cash flow whatsoever. Even though it reported a profit of €3.87m, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through €8.5m in the last year. Coming off the back of negative free cash flow last year, we imagine some shareholders might wonder if its cash burn of €8.5m, this year, indicates high risk.

Our Take On Cy4gate's Profit Performance
As we have made quite clear, we're a bit worried that Cy4gate didn't back up the last year's profit with free cashflow. As a result, we think it may well be the case that Cy4gate's underlying earnings power is lower than its statutory profit. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors.
