Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Banca Mediolanum (BIT:BMED). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Banca Mediolanum Growing?

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. I, for one, am blown away by the fact that Banca Mediolanum has grown EPS by 41% per year, over the last three years. That sort of growth never lasts long, but like a shooting star it is well worth watching when it happens.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Not all of Banca Mediolanum's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I've used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. While we note Banca Mediolanum's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 32% to €1.6b. That's a real positive.

Are Banca Mediolanum Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.

One gleaming positive for Banca Mediolanum, in the last year, is that a certain insider has buying shares with ample enthusiasm. In one fell swoop, CEO & Director Massimo Doris, spent €382k, at a price of €7.65 per share. Big insider buys like that are almost as rare as an ocean free of single use plastic waste.

On top of the insider buying, it's good to see that Banca Mediolanum insiders have a valuable investment in the business. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth €828m. Coming in at 15% of the business, that holding gives insiders a lot of influence, and plenty of reason to generate value for shareholders. So it might be my imagination, but I do sense the glimmer of an opportunity.

Is Banca Mediolanum Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Banca Mediolanum's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bunch of shares, and one has been buying more. Because of the potential that it has reached an inflection point, I'd suggest Banca Mediolanum belongs on the top of your watchlist. You should always think about risks though. Case in point, we've spotted 2 warning signs for Banca Mediolanum you should be aware of, and 1 of them is a bit unpleasant.

The good news is that Banca Mediolanum is not the only growth stock with insider buying. Here's a list of them... with insider buying in the last three months!
