Giglio Group S.p.A. (BIT:GG) shares have had a horrible month, losing 35% after a relatively good period beforehand. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 21% in that time.

Even after such a large drop in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Giglio Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.9x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Italy's Trade Distributors industry is similar at about 0.5x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Giglio Group Has Been Performing

It looks like revenue growth has deserted Giglio Group recently, which is not something to boast about. Perhaps the market believes the recent run-of-the-mill revenue performance isn't enough to outperform the industry, which has kept the P/S muted. Those who are bullish on Giglio Group will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Giglio Group would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. This isn't what shareholders were looking for as it means they've been left with a 56% decline in revenue over the last three years in total. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 5.6% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Giglio Group's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh on the share price eventually.

The Final Word

With its share price dropping off a cliff, the P/S for Giglio Group looks to be in line with the rest of the Trade Distributors industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We find it unexpected that Giglio Group trades at a P/S ratio that is comparable to the rest of the industry, despite experiencing declining revenues during the medium-term, while the industry as a whole is expected to grow. Even though it matches the industry, we're uncomfortable with the current P/S ratio, as this dismal revenue performance is unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
