Control Print's (NSE:CONTROLPR) Returns Have Hit A Wall

There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. That's why when we briefly looked at Control Print's (NSE:CONTROLPR) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Control Print:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.17 = ₹442m ÷ (₹3.0b - ₹356m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2021).

So, Control Print has an ROCE of 17%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 10% generated by the Electronic industry.

Historical performance is a great place to start when researching a stock so above you can see the gauge for Control Print's ROCE against it's prior returns. If you'd like to look at how Control Print has performed in the past in other metrics, you can view this free graph of past earnings, revenue and cash flow.

So How Is Control Print's ROCE Trending?

While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. The company has consistently earned 17% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 89% in that time. 17% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that Control Print has consistently earned this amount. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.

One more thing to note, even though ROCE has remained relatively flat over the last five years, the reduction in current liabilities to 12% of total assets, is good to see from a business owner's perspective. This can eliminate some of the risks inherent in the operations because the business has less outstanding obligations to their suppliers and or short-term creditors than they did previously.

The Bottom Line

The main thing to remember is that Control Print has proven its ability to continually reinvest at respectable rates of return. Therefore it's no surprise that shareholders have earned a respectable 68% return if they held over the last five years. So even though the stock might be more "expensive" than it was before, we think the strong fundamentals warrant this stock for further research.
