Delphi World Money Limited's (NSE:DELPHIFX) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 26%
Those holding Delphi World Money Limited (NSE:DELPHIFX) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 26% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 40% in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, given about half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 35x, you may still consider Delphi World Money as a highly attractive investment with its 16.6x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
For example, consider that Delphi World Money's financial performance has been pretty ordinary lately as earnings growth is non-existent. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this benign earnings growth rate will likely underperform the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Delphi World Money's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any earnings per share growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Whilst it's an improvement, it wasn't enough to get the company out of the hole it was in, with earnings down 63% overall from three years ago. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 25% shows it's an unpleasant look.
In light of this, it's understandable that Delphi World Money's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Bottom Line On Delphi World Money's P/E
Even after such a strong price move, Delphi World Money's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Delphi World Money maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
Having said that, be aware Delphi World Money is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 2 of those are a bit concerning.
It's important to make sure you look for a great company, not just the first idea you come across. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies with strong recent earnings growth (and a low P/E).
