Does Cholamandalam Investment and Finance (NSE:CHOLAFIN) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Cholamandalam Investment and Finance (NSE:CHOLAFIN). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Quickly Is Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Increasing Earnings Per Share?
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Cholamandalam Investment and Finance managed to grow EPS by 16% per year, over three years. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. I note that Cholamandalam Investment and Finance's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. Cholamandalam Investment and Finance maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 21% to ₹50b. That's a real positive.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check Cholamandalam Investment and Finance's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.
Are Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since Cholamandalam Investment and Finance has a market capitalization of ₹446b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at ₹6.0b, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. That's certainly enough to make me think that management will be very focussed on long term growth.
Does Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
As I already mentioned, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance is a growing business, which is what I like to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 3 warning signs for Cholamandalam Investment and Finance (1 is significant!) that you should be aware of.
