If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in India Tourism Development's (NSE:ITDC) returns on capital, so let's have a look.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for India Tourism Development:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.24 = ₹944m ÷ (₹11b - ₹6.6b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).

Therefore, India Tourism Development has an ROCE of 24%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 8.9% earned by companies in a similar industry.

How Are Returns Trending?

India Tourism Development's ROCE growth is quite impressive. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 386% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. On that front, things are looking good so it's worth exploring what management has said about growth plans going forward.

For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. Essentially the business now has suppliers or short-term creditors funding about 62% of its operations, which isn't ideal. And with current liabilities at those levels, that's pretty high.

The Bottom Line

To bring it all together, India Tourism Development has done well to increase the returns it's generating from its capital employed. And a remarkable 389% total return over the last five years tells us that investors are expecting more good things to come in the future. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
