Oriana Power's (NSE:ORIANA) Promising Earnings May Rest On Soft Foundations
Unsurprisingly, Oriana Power Limited's (NSE:ORIANA) stock price was strong on the back of its healthy earnings report. However, our analysis suggests that shareholders may be missing some factors that indicate the earnings result was not as good as it looked.

A Closer Look At Oriana Power's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
For the year to March 2024, Oriana Power had an accrual ratio of 0.81. As a general rule, that bodes poorly for future profitability. And indeed, during the period the company didn't produce any free cash flow whatsoever. Over the last year it actually had negative free cash flow of ₹1.1b, in contrast to the aforementioned profit of ₹543.5m. Coming off the back of negative free cash flow last year, we imagine some shareholders might wonder if its cash burn of ₹1.1b, this year, indicates high risk.
