What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. That's why when we briefly looked at Creative Newtech's (NSE:CREATIVE) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Creative Newtech, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.19 = ₹487m ÷ (₹3.9b - ₹1.3b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
Thus, Creative Newtech has an ROCE of 19%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Trade Distributors industry average of 5.6% it's much better.

How Are Returns Trending?
While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 19% and the business has deployed 434% more capital into its operations. 19% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that Creative Newtech has consistently earned this amount. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
On a side note, Creative Newtech has done well to reduce current liabilities to 34% of total assets over the last five years. This can eliminate some of the risks inherent in the operations because the business has less outstanding obligations to their suppliers and or short-term creditors than they did previously.
The Bottom Line
To sum it up, Creative Newtech has simply been reinvesting capital steadily, at those decent rates of return. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 1,076% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
Creative Newtech does come with some risks though, we found 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is potentially serious...
