Stock Analysis

The 11% return this week takes B.L. Kashyap and Sons' (NSE:BLKASHYAP) shareholders five-year gains to 518%

B.L. Kashyap and Sons Limited (NSE:BLKASHYAP) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 25% in the last quarter. But over five years returns have been remarkably great. In fact, during that period, the share price climbed 518%. Impressive! So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price. While the long term returns are impressive, we do have some sympathy for those who bought more recently, given the 37% drop, in the last year. It really delights us to see such great share price performance for investors.

Since the stock has added ₹1.1b to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

Given that B.L. Kashyap and Sons only made minimal earnings in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue to gauge its business development. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.

For the last half decade, B.L. Kashyap and Sons can boast revenue growth at a rate of 8.0% per year. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. However, the share price gain of 44% during the period is considerably stronger. It might not be cheap but a (long-term) growth stock like this is usually well worth taking a closer look at.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 0.2% in the twelve months, B.L. Kashyap and Sons shareholders did even worse, losing 37%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 44% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
