Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Federal Bank (NSE:FEDERALBNK). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is Federal Bank Growing?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Federal Bank managed to grow EPS by 14% per year, over three years. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. It's noted that Federal Bank's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort our analysis of its margins. While we note Federal Bank achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 26% to ₹83b. That's progress.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.

Are Federal Bank Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's a necessity that company leaders act in the best interest of shareholders and so insider investment always comes as a reassurance to the market. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own Federal Bank shares worth a considerable sum. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at ₹11b. This suggests that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!

While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. Our quick analysis into CEO remuneration would seem to indicate they are. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Federal Bank, with market caps between ₹166b and ₹530b, is around ₹51m.

Federal Bank's CEO took home a total compensation package worth ₹29m in the year leading up to March 2022. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Is Federal Bank Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One important encouraging feature of Federal Bank is that it is growing profits. Earnings growth might be the main attraction for Federal Bank, but the fun does not stop there. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching. You should always think about risks though. Case in point, we've spotted 2 warning signs for Federal Bank you should be aware of, and 1 of them is a bit unpleasant.
