It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We can see that ASK Automotive Limited (NSE:ASKAUTOLTD) does use debt in its business. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.

When Is Debt Dangerous?

A Look At ASK Automotive's Liabilities

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that ASK Automotive had liabilities of ₹5.58b due within 12 months and liabilities of ₹3.68b due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of ₹29.5m and ₹2.95b worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by ₹6.28b.

Given ASK Automotive has a market capitalization of ₹85.8b, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. But there are sufficient liabilities that we would certainly recommend shareholders continue to monitor the balance sheet, going forward.

Our View

ASK Automotive's EBIT growth rate suggests it can handle its debt as easily as Cristiano Ronaldo could score a goal against an under 14's goalkeeper. But we must concede we find its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow has the opposite effect. Looking at all the aforementioned factors together, it strikes us that ASK Automotive can handle its debt fairly comfortably. On the plus side, this leverage can boost shareholder returns, but the potential downside is more risk of loss, so it's worth monitoring the balance sheet.
