Matrix IT Ltd. (TLV:MTRX) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 4th of December to ₪0.55. The payment will take the dividend yield to 4.2%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Matrix IT's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. Prior to this announcement, Matrix IT was quite comfortably covering its dividend with earnings and it was paying more than 75% of its free cash flow to shareholders. The business is earning enough to make the dividend feasible, but the cash payout ratio of 76% indicates it is more focused on returning cash to shareholders than growing the business.
EPS is set to grow by 23.0% over the next year if recent trends continue. If recent patterns in the dividend continue, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 75% which is a bit high but can definitely be sustainable.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ₪1.21 in 2012 to the most recent total annual payment of ₪3.32. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 11% a year over that time. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Matrix IT has impressed us by growing EPS at 23% per year over the past five years. The company doesn't have any problems growing, despite returning a lot of capital to shareholders, which is a very nice combination for a dividend stock to have.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Matrix IT will make a great income stock. While Matrix IT is earning enough to cover the dividend, we are generally unimpressed with its future prospects. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
