15% Of This PCCW Insider's Holdings Were Sold
Insiders were net sellers of PCCW Limited's (HKG:8 ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders sold more stock than they bought.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.
PCCW Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Acting Group MD, Hon-Hing Hui, for HK$7.2m worth of shares, at about HK$5.00 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of HK$5.30. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 15% of Hon-Hing Hui's holding. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Hon-Hing Hui.
Hon-Hing Hui sold a total of 2.22m shares over the year at an average price of HK$5.10. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Does PCCW Boast High Insider Ownership?
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that PCCW insiders own 7.0% of the company, worth about HK$2.9b. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At PCCW Tell Us?
There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. While we feel good about high insider ownership of PCCW, we can't say the same about the selling of shares. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. For example, PCCW has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit concerning) we think you should know about.
