These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. To wit, the China ITS (Holdings) Co., Ltd. (HKG:1900) share price is 62% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 19% (not including dividends) in the same period. So that should have shareholders smiling. In contrast, the longer term returns are negative, since the share price is 35% lower than it was three years ago.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

China ITS (Holdings) was able to grow EPS by 44% in the last twelve months. We note, however, that extraordinary items have impacted earnings. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 62% increase in the share price. This indicates that the market is now more optimistic about the stock.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that China ITS (Holdings) has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 62% in the last twelve months. That certainly beats the loss of about 9% per year over the last half decade. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for China ITS (Holdings) (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) you should know about.
