The past three years for United Company RUSAL International (HKG:486) investors has not been profitable
For many investors, the main point of stock picking is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But if you try your hand at stock picking, your risk returning less than the market. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term United Company RUSAL, International Public Joint-Stock Company (HKG:486) shareholders, since the share price is down 29% in the last three years, falling well short of the market decline of around 18%. And more recent buyers are having a tough time too, with a drop of 25% in the last year.
It's worthwhile assessing if the company's economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let's do just that.
View our latest analysis for United Company RUSAL International
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Although the share price is down over three years, United Company RUSAL International actually managed to grow EPS by 36% per year in that time. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.
Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 17% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. It's probably worth investigating United Company RUSAL International further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between United Company RUSAL International's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. United Company RUSAL International's TSR of was a loss of 25% for the 3 years. That wasn't as bad as its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
Investors in United Company RUSAL International had a tough year, with a total loss of 25%, against a market gain of about 3.6%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 5% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that United Company RUSAL International is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is significant...
