Declining Stock and Decent Financials: Is The Market Wrong About TravelSky Technology Limited (HKG:696)?

Simply Wall St

It is hard to get excited after looking at TravelSky Technology's (HKG:696) recent performance, when its stock has declined 17% over the past month. However, stock prices are usually driven by a company’s financials over the long term, which in this case look pretty respectable. Specifically, we decided to study TravelSky Technology's ROE in this article.

ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments.

How Is ROE Calculated?

Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for TravelSky Technology is:

9.3% = CN¥2.2b ÷ CN¥24b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2025).

The 'return' is the profit over the last twelve months. So, this means that for every HK$1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of HK$0.09.

What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?

So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.

TravelSky Technology's Earnings Growth And 9.3% ROE

When you first look at it, TravelSky Technology's ROE doesn't look that attractive. However, given that the company's ROE is similar to the average industry ROE of 9.3%, we may spare it some thought. Particularly, the exceptional 29% net income growth seen by TravelSky Technology over the past five years is pretty remarkable. Taking into consideration that the ROE is not particularly high, we reckon that there could also be other factors at play which could be influencing the company's growth. For instance, the company has a low payout ratio or is being managed efficiently.

As a next step, we compared TravelSky Technology's net income growth with the industry and were disappointed to see that the company's growth is lower than the industry average growth of 45% in the same period.

Is TravelSky Technology Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?

The three-year median payout ratio for TravelSky Technology is 26%, which is moderately low. The company is retaining the remaining 74%. So it seems that TravelSky Technology is reinvesting efficiently in a way that it sees impressive growth in its earnings (discussed above) and pays a dividend that's well covered.

Moreover, TravelSky Technology is determined to keep sharing its profits with shareholders which we infer from its long history of paying a dividend for at least ten years. Our latest analyst data shows that the future payout ratio of the company is expected to rise to 37% over the next three years. However, the company's ROE is not expected to change by much despite the higher expected payout ratio.

Conclusion

Overall, we feel that TravelSky Technology certainly does have some positive factors to consider. Namely, its respectable earnings growth, which it achieved due to it retaining most of its profits. However, given the low ROE, investors may not be benefitting from all that reinvestment after all. Having said that, the company's earnings growth is expected to slow down, as forecasted in the current analyst estimates.
