Further weakness as Oxford Biomedica (LON:OXB) drops 11% this week, taking one-year losses to 34%
The simplest way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. When you buy individual stocks, you can make higher profits, but you also face the risk of under-performance. Investors in Oxford Biomedica plc (LON:OXB) have tasted that bitter downside in the last year, as the share price dropped 34%. That's well below the market decline of 0.7%. Longer term shareholders haven't suffered as badly, since the stock is down a comparatively less painful 19% in three years. Even worse, it's down 14% in about a month, which isn't fun at all. We do note, however, that the broader market is down 5.8% in that period, and this may have weighed on the share price.
With the stock having lost 11% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

Oxford Biomedica wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.
In just one year Oxford Biomedica saw its revenue fall by 7.0%. That's not what investors generally want to see. The stock price has languished lately, falling 34% in a year. What would you expect when revenue is falling, and it doesn't make a profit? It's hard to escape the conclusion that buyers must envision either growth down the track, cost cutting, or both.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. A Different Perspective
While the broader market lost about 0.7% in the twelve months, Oxford Biomedica shareholders did even worse, losing 34%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 4% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
