S&U (LON:SUS) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To £0.35
The board of S&U plc (LON:SUS) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of £0.35 on the 25th of November, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This takes the annual payment to 6.0% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.
Our analysis indicates that SUS is potentially undervalued!
S&U's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Based on the last payment, S&U was earning enough to cover the dividend, but free cash flows weren't positive. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to fall by 12.9%. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, we estimate the payout ratio could be 48%, which is comfortable for the company to continue in the future.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of £0.41 in 2012 to the most recent total annual payment of £1.25. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 12% per annum over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. It's encouraging to see that S&U has been growing its earnings per share at 11% a year over the past five years. With a decent amount of growth and a low payout ratio, we think this bodes well for S&U's prospects of growing its dividend payments in the future.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think S&U will make a great income stock. While the low payout ratio is redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
