Swelling losses haven't held back gains for ITM Power (LON:ITM) shareholders since they're up 92% over 5 years
ITM Power Plc (LON:ITM) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 13% in the last week. Looking further back, the stock has generated good profits over five years. After all, the share price is up a market-beating 92% in that time. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for the long term, so spare a thought for those caught in the 22% decline over the last twelve months.
In light of the stock dropping 13% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.

Because ITM Power made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
In the last 5 years ITM Power saw its revenue grow at 12% per year. That's a pretty good long term growth rate. While the share price has beat the market, compounding at 14% yearly, over five years, there's certainly some potential that the market hasn't fully considered the growth track record. The key question is whether revenue growth will slow down, and if so, how quickly. There's no doubt that it can be difficult to value pre-profit companies.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 11% in the last year, ITM Power shareholders lost 22%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 14% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand ITM Power better, we need to consider many other factors.
