STMicroelectronics (EPA:STMPA) investors are sitting on a loss of 40% if they invested three years ago
In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But if you try your hand at stock picking, you risk returning less than the market. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term STMicroelectronics N.V. (EPA:STMPA) shareholders, since the share price is down 41% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 19%. And over the last year the share price fell 40%, so we doubt many shareholders are delighted.
It's worthwhile assessing if the company's economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let's do just that.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, STMicroelectronics actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 4.4% per year. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.
After considering the numbers, we'd posit that the the market had higher expectations of EPS growth, three years back. But it's possible a look at other metrics will be enlightening.
With a rather small yield of just 1.4% we doubt that the stock's share price is based on its dividend. Revenue is actually up 7.5% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. It's probably worth investigating STMicroelectronics further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective
STMicroelectronics shareholders are down 40% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 6.1%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 0.4% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
