The Median Technologies SA (EPA:ALMDT) share price has softened a substantial 28% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 56% loss during that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, there still wouldn't be many who think Median Technologies' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.1x is worth a mention when the median P/S in France's Healthcare Services industry is similar at about 2.2x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Median Technologies' Recent Performance Look Like?

Median Technologies could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the market is expecting its poor revenue performance to improve, keeping the P/S from dropping. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Median Technologies' to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 4.9% decrease to the company's top line. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 68% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 19% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 11% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Median Technologies' P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What Does Median Technologies' P/S Mean For Investors?

Median Technologies' plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We've established that Median Technologies currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the wider industry. There could be some risks that the market is pricing in, which is preventing the P/S ratio from matching the positive outlook. This uncertainty seems to be reflected in the share price which, while stable, could be higher given the revenue forecasts.
