Royal Unibrew (CPH:RBREW) shareholders have endured a 27% loss from investing in the stock three years ago
In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But if you try your hand at stock picking, you risk returning less than the market. We regret to report that long term Royal Unibrew A/S (CPH:RBREW) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 32% in three years, versus a market return of about 15%.
With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Although the share price is down over three years, Royal Unibrew actually managed to grow EPS by 3.6% per year in that time. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.
After considering the numbers, we'd posit that the the market had higher expectations of EPS growth, three years back. However, taking a look at other business metrics might shed a bit more light on the share price action.
Revenue is actually up 18% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching Royal Unibrew more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between Royal Unibrew's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Royal Unibrew's TSR, which was a 27% drop over the last 3 years, was not as bad as the share price return.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Royal Unibrew shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 14% over the last year. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 1.6% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
