Funkwerk's (FRA:FEW) Returns On Capital Not Reflecting Well On The Business
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. In light of that, when we looked at Funkwerk (FRA:FEW) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Funkwerk:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.14 = €21m ÷ (€160m - €15m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
Therefore, Funkwerk has an ROCE of 14%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 12% generated by the Communications industry.

While the past is not representative of the future, it can be helpful to know how a company has performed historically, which is why we have this chart above. What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at Funkwerk doesn't inspire confidence. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 20%, but since then they've fallen to 14%. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
The Key Takeaway
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for Funkwerk. And long term investors must be optimistic going forward because the stock has returned a huge 113% to shareholders in the last five years. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we would look further into this stock to make sure the other metrics justify the positive view.
