It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Aurubis (ETR:NDA), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

How Fast Is Aurubis Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Over the last three years, Aurubis has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Aurubis' EPS has risen over the last 12 months, growing from €13.29 to €16.42. There's little doubt shareholders would be happy with that 23% gain.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. While we note Aurubis achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 15% to €18b. That's a real positive.

Of course the knack is to find stocks that have their best days in the future, not in the past. You could base your opinion on past performance, of course, but you may also want to check this interactive graph of professional analyst EPS forecasts for Aurubis.

Are Aurubis Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

As a general rule, it's worth considering how much the CEO is paid, since unreasonably high rates could be considered against the interests of shareholders. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Aurubis, with market caps between €2.0b and €6.4b, is around €2.7m.

Aurubis offered total compensation worth €2.0m to its CEO in the year to September 2021. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Is Aurubis Worth Keeping An Eye On?

As previously touched on, Aurubis is a growing business, which is encouraging. On top of that, our faith in the board of directors is strengthened by the fact of the reasonable CEO pay. So all in all Aurubis is worthy at least considering for your watchlist. We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 1 warning sign for Aurubis that you need to be mindful of.
