HelloFresh SE (ETR:HFG) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 49% in the last quarter. But that is meagre solace in the face of the shocking decline over three years. In that time the share price has melted like a snowball in the desert, down 76%. So it's about time shareholders saw some gains. Of course the real question is whether the business can sustain a turnaround.

While the stock has risen 8.3% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

Given that HelloFresh didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last three years, HelloFresh saw its revenue grow by 8.9% per year, compound. That's a pretty good rate of top-line growth. So it seems unlikely the 21% share price drop (each year) is entirely about the revenue. It could be that the losses were much larger than expected. This is exactly why investors need to diversify - even when a loss making company grows revenue, it can fail to deliver for shareholders.

A Different Perspective

HelloFresh shareholders are up 13% for the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 7% endured over half a decade. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
